Manipur blockade: Healthcare crisis PDF Print

The highway blockade by Naga groups in Manipur continued on Tuesday with healthcare in the state completely paralysed. Hospitals are running out of oxygen, diesel and life saving drugs. Food supplies are scarce. Today the Indian Air force brought essential supplies to the state.

The largest private hospital in Manipur conducts at least 15 surgeries everyday. This number has come sharply come down. The hospital can't admit any more patients requiring GA or patients needing ICU. That's because they're running out of fuel and oxygen.

Healthcare in the state has been hit the hardest by the highway blockade by Naga groups.

The hospital requires 1000 litres of diesel everyday as backup for their support system. Their stock will last another 24 hours.

The hospital needs 15 D-type oxygen cylinders daily. They have stocks to last another four days, and there are 10 patients in the ICU.

Hospitals are running out of options. The situation is assuming a state of medical emergency. Life saving drugs are also in short supply.

"We already have warned patients to make alternative arrangements. It is high time NGOs and the Centre come into picture. I'm afraid for any disaster. Anything can happen. All systems are down," said Dr Kh Palin CMD Shija Hospital.

Not just a case of commodity crisis for Manipur, healthcare has run into serious trouble here. It is no longer an economic blockade, the situation is now a humanitarian crisis.
