Under the SMILE TRAIN SHIJA CLEFT PROJECT, patients between the age group of “3 months- 40 years” can avail the facilities of free treatment for the Cleft Lip and Palate and also other secondary deformities.

Smile Train is a non-profit charitable organization whose mission is to provide assistance to children born with cleft lip and palate, which are treatable, around the world. It is a noble endeavor to contribute in bringing back the smile in every child’s face, born with the Cleft, making them equal to their mates, giving them the new hope to live with dignity and smile that they so longed for. Every child with cleft lip and palate will be treated free of cost, no charges in any form will be levied from the patient and the patient party. The end goal is to make this world free of Cleft lip and palate.

The Smile Train has a unique strategy of empowering local doctors and hospitals in developing countries to help the children in their communities.

Cleft Lip and Palate are birth deformities of the lip and palate giving the patient socially an unacceptable look and defective speech. The best part is the deformity can be treated giving them a chance to life.

SMILE TRAIN SHIJA CLEFT PROJECT:
Smile Train has reognised  Shija Hospitals and Research Institute, Langol as the partnered hospital and Dr. Kh. Palin as the Partnered Plastic surgeon for the project. Under the project patients with Cleft Lip and Palate and other related deformities will be treated free of cost. Free Cost means ABSOLUTELY NO CHARGES will be levied on the patients undergoing the treatment. Lending its support to the mission of SMILE TRAIN, Shija Hospitals will be rendering the services to the needy patients from the region. It is a collaborative effort to render more smiles to the deprived individuals suffering from the Cleft Lip and Palate and other related deformities. It has been observed that patients with Cleft Lip and Palate often feels themselves inferior from their mates, whereas the good news is that it can be treated and rectified with a surgical intervention. Dr. Kh Palin as one of the 50 best Smile Train surgeons

The management of Shija Hospitals, Langol is happy to inform the great news that Dr. Kh Palin, Partnered Plastic Surgeon, has been selected by Smile Train Inc. USA, as one of the 50 best Smile Train surgeons of the world and invited to participate in a new program launching this year with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) from 27th October 2007 to 31st October 2007.
 
He is invited to travel to Baltimore, Maryland, USA in October for the annual meeting of the ASPS. They will not only be able to attend any of the sessions they like, special sessions on cleft surgery are also arranged and special events at which they will meet the leadership of the ASPS and the Smile Train.

During the course of the Annual Meeting there are scientific session, Advanced Cleft Seminar, tour of Washington DC, and an American Presidential dinner. Some of the above programme includes panels, lectures and free papers to foster international exchange of information.

It is a proud moment for the state of Manipur that a project being adopted by the Shija Hospitals and Research Institute, Langol and has been recognized by the world medical fraternity for its good work and positive result. Smile Train Shija Cleft Project was started on June 2006; it is a collaborative effort of Smile Train Inc., USA and Shija Hospitals and Research Institute.

Under Smile Train Shija Cleft Project, patients with Cleft Lip and Palate and related deformities are being treated entirely free of cost. Till date the hospital has performed more than 790 free surgeries since June 2006. Treatments to the needy are given irrespective of the religion, social or the geographical boundary.
 
For the cleft lip and palate patients coming from Myanmar and neighboring states like Nagaland, Mizoram and Assam, an amount of Rs 750/- to Rs 1000/- are now given as traveling expense.

Facilities of free dental consultation, alveolar bone grafting and speech therapy for the cleft patients have been added to the project in 2007.

Cleft Lip and Palate
Clefts are a major problem in developing countries where there are millions of children who are suffering with unrepaired clefts. Most cannot eat or speak properly. Aren’t allowed to attend school or hold a job. And face very difficult lives filled with shame and isolation, pain and heartache.

One cleft is born in every 600 to 800 live births. In India, over 35,000 children are born with cleft lips or palates every year. Many of them do not undergo the treatment because they don’t have the money. Smile Train has come here to help them giving a smile and new life.

One Charity. One Problem. One Goal. Focused on a single problem: cleft lip and palate. The Smile Train is an NGO launched in 1998. Goal is to eradicate the global problem of cleft lips and palates. It has got a comprehensive approach - free training for doctors, free surgery for children and research to find a cure. It is supported by thousands of individuals and private foundations and does not receive any governmental funding.

Started late 2000 having 82 'partner' hospitals, 150 surgeons and so far sponsored more than 65,000 cleft surgeries.

It is 176 bedded ISO 9001:2008 certified hospital providing secondary and tertiary health care in the region. It is among the 82 partnered hospitals recognized by Smile Train Inc. in India.

The hospital has been recognized after satisfying all the parameters being laid down by the Smile Train Inc. keeping in view the quality, infrastructure and world wide acceptable treatment protocols in June 2006 to start a Project to perform 750 surgeries free of cost for Cleft lip, palate & associated problems in 18 months whichever earlier. Cleft patients between 4 months to 40 years from any part of the world are eligible for free treatment.
